Day-Old Chicks On The Way!

I just placed the order for 25 chicks a few hours ago! The order is as follows (all female):

  • 15 White Leghorns (these will be kept for eggs, and five of them are for Dick, Kim's father)
  • 5 Jersey Black Giants (these will be raised for meat)
  • 5 Rhode Island Red (these will be primarily eggers but can be used for meat if needed).

This is my first time ordering chicks from a catalogue, so I'm interested to see what happens. It will also be my first experience brooding chicks; I've let the hen handle that in the past.

The slaughtering of poultry will also be on my list of firsts at some point (some will be meat hens), but that will probably wait until next year when we have some offspring to replace the broilers.

I have also made some changes to the renovations plans of the coop. Kim and I are planning some renovation in the sun room of our house and I'll end up with a whole bunch of lattice to use as chicken fencing. This will allow me to expand the room available for the chicken run. We're going to be taking measurements this week and a trip to Lowes will shortly follow. Woohoo!
